The city is built on five islands and is one of the most densely populated cities in the country. Apart from the developed oil, gas and fishing industries, Kristiansund is a major producer and exporter of bacalao, a salted, dried codfish that is suitable during Lent. Other tourist attractions include Grip, a deserted fishing village with unique architecture and landscapes, the Norwegian Clipfish Museum, and several stone churches.
