Iquitos, Peru
Iquitos is the largest city in the Peruvian jungle, and Peru’s main port along the Amazon River. The city is home to Art Nouveau-style buildings, such as the old Hotel Palace, that are a sign of the city’s boom that began in the 1880’s, as well as rustic homes that line the Belen quarter, which all rest of pilings for protection against rising waters during the rainy season. Boat rides and river cruises on the major rivers and lakes around the city are popular, along with the Hanging Bridges, small walkways constructed in the treetops about 100 feet from the ground.
